Actress Johansson has spend eight years being an ambassador for Oxfam but has decided to quit due to “a fundamental difference of opinion”.
This difference is due to the fact that Johansson is now also scheduled to appear in an American Superbowl ad for the Israeli company Sodastream, which operates out of the settlement Ma’ale Adumim, close to Jerusalem.
Oxfam, which presents itself as “being a confederation of 17 likeminded organizations”, were naturally in an uproar after Johanssons announcement to support the Israeli company. Later it was reported that an internal struggle took place as Oxfam America disagreed on the rest of the organizations view as it appears that this branch of the organization, does not take a hard a stance on illegal settlements.
In a press statement released two days ago Johansson stated that, “SodaStream is not only committed to the environment but to building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine, supporting neighbours working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights.”
Palestinian workers at the Sodastream factory have however told a different story than the Hollywood starlet, stating that the Palestinan workers are being denied, amongst other rights, the right to pray, as well as being forced to work more hours than what is allowed according to Israeli law and the ability to form any type of labour union.
Oxfam (except for the American branch) is therefore a supporter of boycotting Israeli settlements, a feat made harder by the fact that Sodastream often labels their products as “Made in Israel” or “Made in China”.
According to Associated Press, Johansson’s last statement for Oxfam were as follows: “Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years. She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fundraising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam.”
