Ozzies head back down under as UK economy struggles

Posted by

Thousands of Australian and New Zealand expats are fleeing Britain to take up jobs in their home countries as the British economy flounders.

The so-called ‘boomerang effect’ comes as the growth in jobs hits an eight-year high in Australia and New Zealand. The opposite is true in Britain. Although unemployment has started to fall, it recently peaked at its highest level for 17 years. According to research by Track Me Back, a jobs website, the top reason why people are returning down under is that they are sick of economic doom and gloom in the UK.

They also see better job opportunities and better chances to further their careers in their home countries.

Caroline Rafferty, general manager of Track Me Back, said: “People returning home have usually worked in multiple cities globally and are now returning to work in Australia because there are better job opportunities and the economic outlook is more positive.
