Winner of Ahmadiyya Peace Prize Abdul Sattar Edhi ‘under Taliban threat’

Posted by

Dawn: Pakistan’s most revered social worker has been given round-the-clock protection against an alleged Taliban threat, officials said Friday.

Abdul Sattar Edhi, 85, runs the country’s largest charity, which operates hundreds of ambulances and shelters for women, children and the destitute.

Described as a “living saint” for his modest lifestyle and charitable crusade, Edhi has won international peace awards and is one of Pakistan’s most popular figures.

But for the first time he now has round-the-clock police protection in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city of 18 million where he is based.

“There is a threat to him by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which wants to kidnap him and use him to get their detained militants released in exchange,” a Pakistani security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Two armed policemen, who each work a 12-hour shift, have been going everywhere with Edhi since June 5, the official said.

What type of round the clock security is being provided to Mr. Edhi, when two armed policemen, work in shift of 12 hours, each one accompany him where ever he goes during his 24 hours day-and-night,round the clock duties. In such a situation one could only pray thatmay God protect him and give him long life of stable health so that he may continue his noble work for a long period of time. We also pray that God Almighty may turn Talban of TTP into a little bit more kind-hearted,knowledge-seekers and more polite, merciful human beings to serve and share the good cause of whole mankind, Ameen. Let more kind-hearted people from all walks of life, come forwards and join Mr. Edhi efforts of his noble work, for which, I recall last year, he was awarded the prestigious, International Ahmadiyya Peace Prize, and we wish and hope that Mr. Edhi and his foundation also wins the Nobel Prize at the earliest. Ameen.

I share and strongly endorse the feelings and sentiments of your esteemed correspondent, Mr. Khurshid Alam and would further request the government to provide effective security measures to Mr.Edhi and his colleagues/foundation.
And as far as the Nobel prize is concerned, it is the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE which is given on the basis of out-standing Humanitarian services and I honestly/sincerely believe Mr. Edhi richly deserves this honor on merit basis.
